NT Election 2020
Volunteering Sector Proposals

In the Northern Territory more than 70,000 volunteers contribute an estimated $3 billion to the NT economy. Alarmingly, ABS data shows that volunteering rates in the Northern Territory are declining.[1]

Volunteering NT (VNT) is a division of Volunteering SA&NT (VSA&NT), which is the peak body for volunteering in the Northern Territory. The work of VNT is critical to ensure effective support and services of the volunteering sector in the Northern Territory, including Darwin and the surrounding areas of Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.

Prior to the NT Election, we wrote to the major political parties to seek their commitment to endorse our organisation as the recognised peak body for volunteering in the Northern Territory. Importantly, we asked for their support of our request for funding from the Northern Territory Government. We also put forward four other proposals for their consideration.

The table below shows the positions of the parties in relation to each of the proposals. This assessment is based on responses directly to Volunteering SA&NT. Where the Party has made no response on a particular proposal prior to the election, Volunteering SA&NT will continue to advocate on these issues with the incoming Government and Opposition.
